First Tornado Replanting in South End and Forest Park

FIRST TREE TORNADO REPLANTING!

On Saturday October 15th about 20 volunteers with the help of the Springfield Arbor Allies planted 40 trees in the South End and Forest Park neighborhoods of Springfield. These neighborhoods were devastated by the June 1st tornado which lost much of their urban forest canopy from the tornado. The Springfield Arbor Allies President Michael Tully Senior Parks Project Manager with the help of Ed Casey Head City Forester,Alex Sherman Assistant City Forester and Dave Bloniarz USDA Forest Service organized the planting with the trees that were donated by NASCAR. The generous donation of $10,000.00 from NASCAR allowed the city to purchuse 40 ten gallon trees from Sixteen Acres Garden Center which provided the trees at a discount. The list of trees that were planted are Crateagus laevigata 'Crimson Cloud', Nyssa sylvatica, Malus X 'Centurion', Carpinus caroliniana, Ostrya virginiana. These trees were carefully selected to take into account urban constraints and uses as well as climatic conditions which we'll be facing in the future. Many neighbors came out to thank us for all of the hard work and effort to see some trees being planted in the tornado impacted regions. A great BIG THANKS again to NASCAR and Sixteen Acres Garden Center for making this possible!

Please join us Saturday Oct. 29th at 8:30am in the Forest Park Conference Room next to the Administration Building in the park for the next tree planting. Please arrive promptly because we depart from here shortly after our demonstration planting to the neighborhoods to plant.

Sincerely,

Michael Tully

President of the Springfield Arbor Allies
