Brightwood and Six Corners Neighborhood Planting

ARBOR ALLIES PLANT 8 NEW TREES IN BRIGHTWOOD AND SIX CORNERS NEIGHBORHOODS

The Arbor Allies teamed up with Boy Scout Troops 303 (Sixteen Acres), Ground works Springfield and New North Citizens to plant 8 trees in the city last Saturday. The effort was initiated and organizeed by the Arbor Allies but was lead by Ryan Kuehl of Boy Scout Troop 303 who was going for his Eagle Scout badge. The Arbor Allies guided him on the proper planting techniques and from there he had everybody working hard planting the trees properly. We planted the first 4 trees Quercus palustris- Pin Oaks in front of Kenefick Park along Plainfield St. where it completed the front area of the park with a nice tree lined street. All the volunteers were very eager workers and had this neighborhood complete before 10:30 am. Then it was time to move on to the Six Corner Neighborhood at Cherry St. Cemetery where beautification efforts have been lead by Keep Springfield Beautiful with help from the Arbor Allies to highlight one of the cities oldest and most historic cemeteries. The Arbor Allies and volunteers planted 4 Cornus kousas- Dogwood Trees last Saturday along the perimeter of the cemetery. In this cemetery lays a Revolutionary War Veteran, Civil War Veterans and World War I Veterans. The Arbor Allies have been honored to help volunteer their public service work for service veterans who gave everything. Keep Springfield Beautiful and Arbor Allies believe it is imperative to highlight this cemetery with ornamental trees to bring some attention to some of Springfield’s bravest heroes.

Gunn Square Park Planting

Hi everyone,

The Springfield Arbor Allies planted 3 new Quercus palustris-Pin Oaks in Gunn Square Park. This was part of the Springfield College Humanics Day where volunteers from the college do service work throughout the City of Springfield. Thank you to all of you who came out to volunteer on this wet and rainy day. The air, water and beauty is a little better because of your efforts in the Upper Hill Neighborhood of Springfield. A special thanks to Michael Jones who really took the lead on getting the trees in this park. We plan on planting 3 Liriodendron tulipifera- Tulip Trees in the spring at Gunn Square Park to compliment the 3 Pin Oaks. Please come out to volunteer when you get the chance.

Sincerely,

Michael Tully
